EDENHOPE: Austen’s Social Fabric Workshop with Carol Close

Wimmera Libraries and Edenhope Artist Residency are thrilled to present a 2-hour workshop with this month’s Artist in Residence, Carol Close.

Based on Hilary Davidson’s book Jane Austen’s Wardrobe and Jane’s own witty letters to her sister Cassandra, we will look at what was happening behind the scenes of her famous novels, the part the Industrial Revolution played in the cotton craze, how heavy wartime taxes changed what people wore and what they could buy.
The workshop will also decode the strict, high-stakes etiquette of Regency balls, Austen’s love of a good party, her keen eye on fashion and how to change her gowns to save money. This is all connected back to her characters, plots and her writing.
After the talk, you will get to make your own authentic, Regency-style dance card to take home.

Spaces are limited, so please book to reserve yours! Tea and coffee provided.

Our monthly movie screening will be held after the event at 12:30pm – contact the library to find out what’s on.
